Crohn’s Disease

WHAT IS CROHN’S DISEASE:-

It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine.It causes ulceration in the small and large intestine.

It is closely related to Ulcerative Colitis which involves only the colon.Together both are frequently reffered to as Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD).

It is more commonly seen in the last part of small intestine called terminal ileum and caecum.

  • CAUSES OF CROHN’S DISEASE:-

1.Immune system-A virus or bacteria may trigger Crohn’s disease.When the immune system tries to fight off the invading microorganism an abnormal immune resonse causes the immune system to attack the cells in the digestive tract.

2.Heredity-It is more common in person who has family history.

  • SYMPTOMS OF CROHN’S DISEASE:-

-Abdominal pain

-Diarrhea

-Weight loss

-Poor appetite

-Fever

-Night sweats

-Rectal pain

-Rectal  Bleeding

  • TYPES OF CROHN’S DISEASE:-

1.Crohn’s colitis-is an inflammation of colon.abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea are the symptoms.

2.Crohn’s enteritis-is an inflammation of small intestine.Abdomina pain and diarrhea is the common symptom.

3.Crohn’s terminal ileitis-inflammation of the terminal ileum.Abdominal pain and diarrhea are the common symptom.

4.Crohn’s entero-colitis and ileo-colitis-Inflammation that involves both small intestine and colon.Bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain are common symptom.Small intestinal obstruction can also occur.

  • DIAGNOSIS OF CROHN’S DISEASE:-

1.Blood test-To check for anaemia or to check for signs of infection.

2.Faecal occult blood test-A stool sample is given to detect blood in the stool.

3.Colonoscopy-To view entire colon through a flexible,thin tube.during the procedure a small sample of tissue is taken for lab analysis.If clusters of inflammatory cells are seen it confirm the diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease.

4.Flexible sigmoidoscopy-Examine the sigmoid colon through the flexible,thin tube.

5.CT scan

6.MRI-It is useful to evaluate a fistula around anal area and the small intestine.

7.Barium enema– Before the test, you receive an enema with a contrast solution  containing barium.The Barium dye is gone through the rectum,colon and the portion of small intestine.

  • TREATMENT OF CROHN’S DISEASE:-

Allopathic treatment-
